Which of these would be better, do you think?

Assuming that all else is equal:

A Dual-Core Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz 1333FSB 6MB Cache CPU and an MSI nVidia GeForce 8600GT Twin Turbo 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express

Or a Dual-Core Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz 1333FSB 4MB Cache and an MSI nVidia GeForce 9600GT OC 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express?

Edited because I'm an idiot.

Basically I'm considering trading off CPU for a better video card. Sorry for the mistake!

Definately!

I'm not an expert on either.... but my current (3 year old) Notebook is a 2.8G Pentium 4. So I don't know how much faster a 2.33G is in comparison to it or a 3G. But I'm not sure if you really need that extra speed. Me, I'd consider going for the better video card, as video speed is likely to be more important than processor for most applications you've mentioned.

Video card speed can be that much of an issue? Hmm, I suppose for games and graphics stuff, the kind of thing I personally don't do much of. I'd have figured that it was better to have a faster CPU but I suppose the graphics card can be something of a bottleneck.

Well [livejournal.com profile] bobquasit did say he wanted a machine he could run games on, and these days games are designed for high end video cards. I can't run hardly any games that came out in the past 3 years because of video requirements and since he wants a machine that can run 3-5 years into the future he needs the better quality card over the processor speed.

There's a point where the processor speed isn't as important (and he is going for one of the new dual chip processors) or gets in the way (My machine would be better off with a slower cooler chip as it's cooling system doesn't handle it well all the time, but my laptop has a desktop processor).
