World of Warcraft trial - Day 10

Last night I was on my own again. So I went back to the Murloc village with my mage.

I was extremely cautious, standing well back and sniping one at a time. I wiped out all the dangerous animals nearby first, so as to avoid getting caught fighting two enemies at once. The problem is that enemies re-spawn after a while; I can work my way deep into an area, but if I have to run for my life I'll end up running through legions of respawned enemies. It works better to be near a "safe" zone such as a village. Enemies may follow me into it, perhaps, but I've noticed that some or all of them will run away once I'm well in.

On the other hand, I'm concerned that I may piss people off by bringing enemies into town. I'd hate to accidentally be responsible for any PC deaths.

After a while it became obvious that I wasn't killing off Murlocs fast enough to be able to complete the quest. And in some cases they were clumped too close together. When two of them came for me I was able to turn one into a sheep (temporarily) and kill the other, but when three came for me at once I turned and ran. I managed to completely avoid dying; I'm good at that.

I wasn't far from tenth level, so I spent some time killing Prowlers (wolves) and young forest bears until I leveled. That gave me access to some new spells; I was able to afford my first area-effect spell, Frost Nova (shades of Diablo II, anyone?).

I also have access to talents for the first time. The problem is that I don't know which are best. I'll do some research, and of course any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Oh, I almost forgot: I also did an experiment while I was depopulating the forest wildlife. One of my fire spells has the longest range, 35 yards; I was relying on that for my first few strikes, and then switching to other, faster spells as necessary. But I decided to try starting with a frost spell instead. It has a shorter range (30 yards) but it slows the target. I suspected that I could hit a slowed target more often before it could reach me even if it started out closer to me, and it looks as if I was right.

Apart from that I practiced up my cooking a bit, and then switched over to play my Tauren for a little while before going to bed.

He's having some trouble. He's a seventh-level shaman, trying to kill some kind of pig-men. The problem was that I kept dying, over and over. I came close to completing the quest several times, but never quite made it. I have decided that when you die more than two times while trying to complete a quest, that means it's time to go do something else for a while in order to build yourself up.

I ended up shutting down the computer at around 11:10, about an hour earlier than the two previous nights. Now that I know where the real-time clock is in the game, I can track the time properly. And since I'd flossed and brushed and taken my vitamins earlier in the evening, I was able to get to sleep soon after shutting down. Otherwise, I'd have been up for another 40 minutes or so.

I was still dead tired this morning, though.

Decision Time

There are only a few days left before I have to decide if I'm subscribing. Yesterday I received something in the mail that made that decision easier: a 10% off coupon from Best Buy, good on any three computer or video games or accessories, and valid (by coincidence) from 8/14 through 8/17. My trial expires on 8/15, I believe.

I could use that 10% off along with a leftover gift card and a $5 certificate to get a 60-day membership for about $6 cash. And I probably will.

Oh, something I should mention: if I'm online and you try to contact me and I don't respond, I am NOT ignoring you. I either didn't see your whisper (I'm often focused on whatever battle is going on at the moment), or was AFK (it happens fairly often). So please keep trying! The game is much more fun when I'm playing with others, and I'm not yet comfortable joining up with strangers.

Hmm...I seem to recall that my old Diablo guild (now defunct) was going to re-form in WoW. I wonder if they did?
