Climbing

Sebastian has had an interesting day. First, he took a small stool and tried to unlock the door to the basement, or, as he calls it, the "laundry". We keep most of his videotapes in a storage area off of the top landing there, and the door is secured with a chain. We can't actually lock the door, because the cats need to be able to get to their litterbox in the basement.

For a while we had a problem with the cats because Sebastian was shutting the basement door, but I nailed a piece of wood to the frame so the door couldn't be latched, and Teri and her mother moved the door-chain so that there was just enough room for the cats to squeeze through.

Anyway, this morning Teri found Sebastian standing on a little stool and fumbling around with the chain. He announced that he was getting his train video.

Later, he took his time-out stool (which is much taller) and used it to successfully get a "bean", that is, a jelly bean. Unfortunately the box he got into was one I'd bought for Teri for Christmas: Harry Potter beans. Luck was not with the red-headed one that day. Teri found him happily chewing on a bean. For several seconds he chewed with delight, but suddenly the expression on his face changed, almost magically, to disgust and distress. Leaning forward, he deposited the mangled bean into Teri's hand. It was, as it turned out, sardine flavor.

Later today Teri took Sebastian to a nearby Montessori school to get some information. Although he's still only 28 months old he's very advanced for his age and we're starting to think that he needs to be around other children more, in order to socialize properly. When Teri told him that they were going to see a school, he got all excited. In fact, he talked about nothing else all day.

I don't know that he's really ready for school, mind you; or, well, that we're ready for him to go to school, not full-time, anyway. But two or three days a week, part-time, might be good. I'll look into daycare, too.

Lest anyone think that raising a child is all fun and games, two nights ago I woke up at 1AM because he was calling me (I always wake up when he calls). He really wanted a cup, and so I had to take him downstairs. As I came back with his cup in the dark, though, my foot had a disasterous intersection with a footstool. I didn't realize it at the time, but I had cut up the bottom of my foot pretty badly.

Anyway, he didn't fall asleep until 4AM...and I had to get up at 5:30AM to get ready for work. So I'm still operating on a sleep deficit.
