ADL changes position...sort of

The ADL just released a statement acknowledging the historicity of the Armenian Genocide - and actually used the word "genocide".

Still no word on whether they're going to re-hire the former head of the New England chapter of the ADL, who was fired for taking that very position.

And the ADL will continue to oppose recognition of the Genocide by Congress. So this is really a very mixed bag. One wonders if the ADL also feels that governmental recognition of the Holocaust is unnecessary and inappropriate! I suspect not, and I'd be very interested to hear them explain the discrepancy.

Just made a comment over on a story about the ADL's changed position on Haaretz.com (http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/895920.html). Comments are moderated, so they may not print it; we'll see.

This story contains an error.

"... Watertown...decided to cut its ties with the ADL sponsored "No Place for Hate" program, after they discovered that the ADL was not planning to support Schiff's bill"?

No. Watertown moved to cut ties after discovering that the ADL was actively campaigning to KILL the bill.

The irony of the ADL working to support the cause of what they themselves now admit are genocide deniers is simply too bitter to swallow. Unfortunately, although they now admit the historicity of the Armenian genocide, they still maintain that it is inappropriate for the US Congress to take a position on the subject.

I suppose we should feel grateful that the ADL hasn't decided that Congress shouldn't recognize the Holocaust!
