Pop-ups on LJ

Has anyone else noticed some obnoxious pop-up ads on LJ in the last day or two? I'd never noticed them before. They seem to be sponsored by LJ, too.

Not me. Do you have a pop-up blocker active? About the only place I still see pop-ups is at a couple of newspaper comic sites.

Now, I'm a person who doesn't object to ads; there ain't no free lunch so something has to pay for this stuff. But I do object to pop-ups that have to be cleared out if one wants to do anything.

Solution

Use Firefox 2.0 with the add-on Adblocker Plus, utilizing one of the pre-fabricated filters. With this combination you no longer get pop-ups, or any of those annoying flashing banners, and you can also block other advertisement images.

Actually, while I've not seen advertising pop-ups I have seen a feature where when your mouse is on a link a "preview" of the target shows up. I've not seen that at too many sites yet but I've seen it at some others. I think it's intended as a service, not as advertising.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing I suppose, except of course for those poor souls who are still on dial-up or perhaps have other slow connections. Of course these days there's so much stuff on web sites that if somebody has an old machine and a slow modem the Internet is probably a frustrating place.
