"The best way to learn something is to experience it."
Playing through the game, and making mistakes is the best way to learn how to play the game. Thats how I learned about playing Morrowind. But I suppose in some ways the "worldly" understanding of the game ruins it, because I know where all the best equipment is, etc etc. So after playing it once through, and despite having so many options for quests and faction affiliations, I still ended up playing a heavy fighter type, and obtaining some powerful armor within the first two hours of play.
The real challenge is playing a type you aren't naturally good with. In Morrowind I found that thieves/agility types and magic users were pretty much a waste, and those were more abilities that accented my domineering meat wall character.
I considered that. But I remembered some games where a few poor choices early on can screw up a character for good.
As it stands, I keep getting my ass kicked when I go up against a foe of any consequence - so I figure I must be doing something wrong.
And there are lots of little things I don't know. For example, I discovered that once I joined the Fighter's Guild I could sleep at guildhouses for free. But can I store my extra stuff in the lockers at the end of the bed? And can I open barrels and things in cities, or does that count as stealing?
So anyway, how did you end up here on my flist? Do we know each other from some other venue, or did you find me some other way? I'm curious!
My advice: save often, try out things. What I've found helpful is to find a place to stay, IE: kill someone as a contract from the Fighter's Guild, ransack their house, and start living in it, but another piece of advice is- if you don't need it right now, you probably won't later, so travel light. And often times the general rule is: if it isn't your's, and no one gave you permission to open it, don't-- unless you feel like stealing and getting away with it.

1. Well, if you were riding around on a horse with no name you probably were out of the rain, right?
(Okay, that was pushing it)
2. I think if I were going to play a "flower picker" in such a game I'd take some sort of female type. A "hippie chick." :)
Re: Evan!
I laughed my ass off when I read that, because I feel the exact same way. Yahoo email drove me completely up the wall.
