Arcanum Agonistes

I'm hooked on Arcanum. I've stayed up late playing it, and have been having a lot of fun.

A little while ago I laid off my initial character, Jereme Kohn. He was a human with elf ancestry, which gave him a boost in magic skills. He simply wasn't up to dealing with many elements of the game. Instead, I took a half-ogre warrior with thickened skin. He's incredibly stupid (INT 4!), but incredibly strong (STR 23). And he has NO magic nor technological skills. He's also basically good, alignment-wise, if you were wondering.

Having an INT of 4 produces a very different game, I must say. My dialog options are all pretty dumb-sounding, and many of them are quite funny. Unfortunately I was also unable to attract many followers, and as for INT-based skills, forget about it. But I was pumping all my points into STR anyway (with an occasional foray into DEX and CON), so that didn't matter so much. Still, I was a little bummed that Sog Mead Mug, the half-ogre hireling, refused to work for me.

So I tried putting a point into my CHA(risma), raising it to 9, and a point into INT. The effect was dramatic! Suddenly my dialog options changed completely, and sounded quite educated. Sog Mead Mug joined up. I was able to get quests from people who previously wouldn't speak to me. Like I said, dramatic.

It's really quite impressive, how much detail and complexity have been put into this game. Too bad that almost no one plays it!

It does crash once in a while, by the way. The screen suddenly goes black, except for a series of short green lines at the top, and I have to turn the system off with the power switch. Which really sucks, because then it has to go through the whole scandisk thing when I start up again. I've taken to saving fairly often to avoid losing much.

I've pretty much given up on Black & White, by the way. Neat idea that just didn't work. Oh well.
