Politics
I was sorry to see the end of Howard Dean's campaign. Unlike many, I never got personally involved in it or picked him as my candidate, but out of ALL the campaigns his came the closest to giving me hope. The idea that ordinary citizens could be valuable in our system for more than just the money that they could give, and could participate online and express their ideas and opinions in a way that really mattered...well, like so many other people I've met, I could have really gotten behind something like that. I could have even given money and volunteered. That bastard John Kerry will get my vote (although not in the primary), but he will NEVER get anything more from me than that. And neither will any establishment Democratic candidate, until the party convinces me that it is no longer the pathetic whoreish GOP punching bag that it has been for the past decade-plus.
I've said before that I don't believe that Kerry will win. He's a stuffed shirt at heart, a sellout who betrayed the values which should matter most to him and which are his biggest selling point: the welfare of the American soldier. Rather than stand up for them, he sold them out just as he, himself was sold out when he was young. And for what? His own political ambition. And he was even wrong about that! He let the GOP mindf-ck him into thinking he had to violate the Constitution, his sworn oath of office, and every principle of integrity and honor in order to remain "electable".
I find his exploitation of veterans and their issues to be clumsy, cynical, and nauseating.
And now he wants everyone to believe that he simply didn't realize what was in the Iraq war bill. Bullsh-t.
Even if Kerry eventually persuades Dean to give him his endorsement and his "list" of supporters, it won't do him any good as long as he remains the whore that he is. He and Terry McAulife will think of it as nothing more than a new list of people that they can ask for money, and they're dead wrong. They'll offer the usual bullshit "participation" - "write a letter to the GOP!" "fill out our bullshit survey!" - and people will recognize it for the crap that it is.
If I could have a wish I'd like to believe that somehow there really could be a successful movement in which the people could actually organize, and be effective, and reclaim the country. But at this point, I can't really bring myself to believe it. Dean claims to be starting a movement, but I'd be amazed if it went anywhere. And unlike some, I have no worship for Howard Dean personally. He seems like a good guy and more honest then most, but some of his bloggers seem to be disturbingly cultlike...
Not to be totally depressing, though, here's a cheering political link sent to me by my friend Klyfix. Looks like Bush isn't quite as popular with NASCAR people as the media would have us think...
On other fronts, we're looking into school for Sebastian. Does anyone know anything about Montessori schools?
