Last Man Standing
I thought it might be a race to make it to the polls last night before they closed, but Teri made good time and we got there just after 8:30 PM. The signs were still up, so I walked it.
My voting location is in a firehouse; in fact, there was a fire engine right there, next to the voting stands. I was the only voter there, as it happened. The volunteers (older people) seemed surprised to see me. Apparently there was a pool going on for how many people would show up.
When Teri had gone earlier in the day someone had mentioned that most people didn't seem to know that it was voting day. It certainly wasn't a big item in the news - neither Teri nor I found out about it until that day.
I got my ballot (paper, with scan-lines that you connected with a special pen - clear and easy to read), marked it off for Dean and seven of his delegates (noting with interest that he had the most delegates to chose from, including a number of Big Names in Rhode Island politics), and fed the ballot into the scanner. The scanner had a counter indicating the number of votes that had been cast that day; I was number 127. As I headed for the door, one of the volunteers came in carrying all the "POLLING PLACE HERE" signs; they may have been shutting down early.
Kerry won, of course, and Dean only got 4% in RI. I'm glad he won VT, though. And I'll repeat here that I will NOT work for Kerry, nor will I give the DNC one thin dime until they prove that they are willing to work in my interest, not (just) that of big business and the status quo. I'll vote the straight Democratic ticket, but only because the GOP is infinitely worse.
Way to de-motivate the base, guys!
