Things

Once again events have kicked into overdrive.

What the hell, this is going to run long. So here's an LJ-Cut.

On Thursday we finally bought a new car, or rather, a new used car. But it's the newest I've ever had. It's a 2001 Nissan Altima, dark red, with only 46K miles on it. It's more Teri's car than mine, of course; I'll be using her crappy old Neon to get to and from the train station.

It's got lots of extras, including power everything and a CD player. It also has alloy wheels, although I'm not sure what good they are, exactly. The biggest selling point for me was that it's still on its factory warranty, which is transferable. The biggest selling point for Teri was that when she sat in it, she really liked it.

And so do I; it's got great head room, which is something I really appreciate. For some reason too many cars seem to be designed for much shorter people, even though at 5'11" (and a bit) I'm not all that much taller than the average.

We drove the car to visit some of Teri's family in Pennsylvania this weekend, and there I experienced something new: shooting. I'd never handled a gun before in my life, but I surprised everyone by firing off ten rounds from a Barretta shotgun. Okay, quick explanation: I am not 100% sure that it was a shotgun. It took large shells, and apparently fired a spray of pellets, so it matches my idea of what a shotgun is.

I should explain that I have no particular objection to firing guns, although everyone there seemed to assume that as a proud liberal I'd run for the hills at the mere suggestion. My only objection is to firing at living creatures. Since I was only shooting at flying orange clay disks, it was no problem. Clay doesn't bleed or feel pain or die, after all.

The recoil does pack a bit of a wallop, although not as much as I feared. I'd learned a little bit about guns, mostly from reading the works of Robert A. Heinlein, so I was actually a little bit prepared. Teri ended up with a nasty bruise on her shoulder from the first shot (she adjusted quickly, though), but while my shoulder got a little sore, I was able to cope with the recoil well. No bruises.

On the other hand I didn't hit a damn thing, while Teri managed to nail a disk that fell short. I have really lousy hand-eye coordination.

I've placed the order with FuitadNET hosting services, and am in the process of moving my site and domains to their servers. The process should be pretty seamless from a reader's perspective, I hope - except maybe the site will come up a bit faster once the change is complete. Once I've successfully changed my RQ site over, I'll move the other two sites I've handled as well.

I think this shows that it's a really fucking stupid idea to try and gag your customers. But somehow I don't think the Your-Site idiots will get the message. :D

I may be getting a new computer before too long. More later.
