Adventures of Bunny Boy, Episode #29

Sebastian had a couple of firsts yesterday: he went on a trolley underground, and he started asking "why?" a lot.

The trolley thing had been worrying me. He's fascinated by trolleys, and my parents had managed to get him on one once (above ground only), but he was terrified by the thought of riding in one, and particularly at the thought of going underground. Which, if you don't know the Boston public transportation system, is an incredible handicap. Driving in Boston is mostly a pain in the @ss, and the subway is really the only way to get to a lot of places conveniently or without spending $$$ for parking.

Teri and I had tried to get him on the trolley for a single stop underground once, and he'd cried so hard that it was completely pathetic - we just couldn't do it to him.

But on Easter my mother suggested we all go to the Prudential Center, and the only practical way to get there was via the Green Line, underground. So we brought three Thomas the Tank Engine books, and all five of us got into the trolley: Sebastian, my parents, Teri, and me.

He was only slightly nervous for a second or two at first, but I was amazed at how well he took it. Teri was more nervous then Sebastian was! But he wasn't bothered at all as we plunged underground after St. Mary's stop. He made the whole trip there without any trouble.

Once there, he indulged in some typical two-year-old badness, of course. That's been getting worse lately, and is sometimes very hard to take. He knocked off my glasses and kicked me in the crotch, although not intentionally; he was squirming and trying to get away and run amok.

We took him up to the Skywalk at the top of the Prudential, and he was his usual incredibly cute self. He was particularly fascinated by a couple of phones which delivered canned spiels about the city. He kept picking them up and talking to them. "Hello! I am here. What are you doing?"

Eventually we headed back home again. Sebastian was a little scared of the trolleys in the underground station this time; he hid his head against me and told me that he was scared. But when our train finally arrived, he let me carry him on without a whimper, and he actually had a long conversation with a woman on the train. It was awfully cute - he likes to flirt.

As for the "why", Teri pointed it out on the way home. He'd just started asking "why" about everything, and I hadn't even noticed!
