Try, try again

The democrats.org blog is pretty light; it seems to suffer from the usual failings of online liberal and progressive boards. That is, it's filled with a lot of irrelevent chatter, socializing, and as soon as a troll appears everything just goes to hell. It can be fun, and there are some nice people there, but it's certainly not a place to try to seriously discuss policy.

I was told by one or two regulars that it will settle down eventually, that things are extra chaotic because of the election...but I was also pointed to The Daily Kos as a good place to talk policy.

You see, I came up with what I think are some DAMN good ideas for the Democrats, and I'd really like to bounce them off some thoughtful and intelligent people.

So I signed up for the Kos. Right off the bat there was a good sign: there's a 24-hour waiting period before you can post a comment, and a seven-day waiting period before you can make a diary entry, whatever those are. So I waited 24 hours and made my first comment with some of my ideas this morning.

Haven't seen a response yet, but I'll doubtless be checking every few minutes.

Cool. Good luck to you.

I'm beginning to think that the democratic party is hopeless and a new political party needs to be formed (call it the "not just a catspaw for the Republican party Democrats" or whatever). Not that I really think that will have a ghost of a chance either, but as it stands the suggestions you make would have to be approved and implemented by the Democratic leadership, and I just don't see them doing that.

There was something really funny on the Daily Show a few days ago. Jon was talking to his "political expert" - Ed Helms, I think - who said that the Democrats just weren't making it as a second party. Instead, he suggested, they'd make a really great third party - they'd beat the Greens and the Libertarians all hollow.

Jon: "But who would be the second party, then?"
Ed: "The Republicans, Jon! They're really good at it."

In the late 1970s there was talk that the Republicans were dead, and Libertarians thought their party might replace the GOP. Remember that at that point the Democrats had controlled Congress for twenty some odd years. The GOP didn't get control of the House until over ten years later.

Sure, the GOP might manage to keep the membership in line, keep their interest groups all docile, and prevent defections. This would be a truly remarkable accomplishment.

However, I see that the Religious Right is demanding that the GOP pay them off, some GOP supporters want a purge of suppoosed RINOs (Republicans In Name Only, like Chafee, Spector, and I'd suppose the senators from Maine), and John McCain is apparently starting on a run for the Presidency in 2006.

It's way too early to assume that the GOP have successfully established the Thousand Year Reich.
