Saturday

It's late, but I want to make a few notes about the day.

I'll catch up on comments soon, but I'm getting pretty tired.

Sebastian and I went out to breakfast this morning at Coffee & Cream; as usual, he was very well-behaved. Afterwords we took Teri to the animal shelter, and stopped at a barber shop we'd passed to get me a haircut.

I'd never been there before, but it was cool - like stepping back through time. There was a spinning barber pole out front, and inside there were old-fashioned comic drawings of barbers on the walls and a real old-fashioned Coke machine - one with a long glass door on one side, with the tops of the bottles showing behind the glass.

There were huge stacks of magazines, and when I saw them I knew I'd like the place: The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, Harpers, and other generally progressive and intellectual magazines. Not a Sports Illustrated in sight.

The barber was an older gentleman. He sat Sebastian down on a nearby chair as he cut my hair, and Sebastian was good as gold - sat quietly and watched as the barber and I talked.

After, we headed over to the Children's Festival in Franklin. The weathermen had been predicting rain for the whole weekend, and the skies were gray and a bit threatening, but I still didn't think it was likely to rain soon. So we found our way to the festival.

I urged Sebastian to go on a pony ride, but he didn't want to; I guess the ponies were a little too big and intimidating, although one of them was very small indeed. I wasn't about to force him, so I let him go into one of those inflated things where children bounce around like little maniacs instead. He had fun, and later insisted on going in again - but came out after less than a minute, the second time.

He decorated a cupcake. I wish I had a picture of it - it was EXACTLY like a child's demented dream of the ideal cupcake, covered with M&Ms, colored jimmies ("sprinkles" to non-New Englanders), and colored mini-marshmallows. Then he started getting hungry, so we stopped by a table where he made a little sand-art sculpture to take home to Teri, and headed back to Woonsocket for lunch.

We were both in the mood for New York System wieners (have I explained about those before? If not, let me know), so we went to New York Lunch. The counter was full (Sebastian was disappointed), so we grabbed the booth at the back. But before we sat down, we got into a conversation with the woman who works there. Sebastian was wearing a shirt with a big red picture of a crab on it; she took it for a lobster, and took us into the back to show us a HUGE lobster in a pot (not being cooked, mind you; I guess it was on Death Row, though). Sebastian was interested, but didn't get too close to it.

Our booth was directly below a small window that lead to the kitchen, so that the people in the front of the store can yell orders for fries and such to the cook in the back (wieners are prepared in the front). Sebastian couldn't resist getting into a long-running "peeking" game with the guy in the back, who really seemed to get a kick out of it.

After lunch we headed for home. Spent thirty great minutes on the swings before we went to pick up Teri. Did a bit of shopping with her, and then I barbecued some hamburgers for dinner - they came out great.

And now, sleep.
