What the hell?!?

I am sitting here listening to people in the next cube discuss their new BMWs, Audis, Mercedes, etc.

The '96 Neon I drive is now smoking copiously from under the hood every morning. I cannot afford to have it looked at.

What the fuck is wrong with this picture?

Well, I can think of a couple of possibilities.

1. They have fewer responsibilities and thus can blow money on pointlessly expensive cars.

2. By skilled smoozing, brownnosing, whatever, they're paid significantly more.

I'm guessing mostly 2.

What sort of pay policies does the company have? I know that in some cases newer hires are paid less than the previous hires because while they reduce the pay scale existing workers get paid the same. That was an issue in the big grocery store job conflict in California; the unions didn't want new folk to be paid less.
