Sebastian catch-up

Last Wednesday Sebastian went through a big change: most of his friends in school left his class. Because he was born in October, he was younger than most of them. So when they moved into kindergarten, he had to stay behind.

That means he also went from being the youngest in the class, to being the oldest.

He does miss his friends. But he's been awfully good so far. We'd had some trouble with his behavior a while back. He would get excited and knock toys off of tables, or even push other kids. But for the last several weeks he's been GREAT. The teachers are very happy with him. And he's been helping the younger kids in his class.

He has also been taking swimming lessons at the gym, and I'm frankly surprised at how well he's doing. He can put his face underwater now, and is making great progress overall.

I've mentioned it before, but lately he's been absolutely crazed for Willy Wonka. He has both the old a new movies, and I combined the music from both into a single CD for him. And yesterday, because he'd been extra good at school, I gave him a special treat: we went to the library and took out Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I have the book, of course, but it's one of the many that I can't find. It's probably in a box in the basement.

Anyway, I started reading it to him last night at bedtime. Teri thought it might be too old and difficult for him, but I suspected he'd be fine. I had no idea HOW fine, though.

I've rarely seen him so happy. He loved the book, and to my amazement stayed awake through three and a half chapters. He laughed a lot, at all the appropriate places, and I laughed with him. It was great.

This morning I brought him up with me to spend the day with my parents. He insisted we bring the book to read on the train. So we sat together and I read several more chapters to him. When Charlie and the other children went to the Chocolate Room, tasted the grass, and Grandpa Joe said he could go around on all fours grazing all day, Sebastian completely cracked up. He pretty much charmed everybody in the compartment.

I'm so glad we can share things like that! And I'm really looking forward to reading more books with him.
