Another suicide attempt goes wrong
So last night we switched back to the previous campaign. I should explain that there are two - wait a minute. Did I mention that this is a D&D post? No? Okay, it's a D&D post. If you're nerd-averse, skip this one.
Although if you're nerd-averse, what are you doing here?
Okay. So there are two campaigns going, and the DMs switch off every so often. In one campaign, I'm playing an amnesiac half-elf cleric, and in the other I'm playing a human paladin.
Anyway, last night we switched back from the paladin campaign to the cleric one. Unfortunately I don't roleplay the cleric well, because I never really found a "voice" for him.
What do I do when a character isn't working out for me? I try to kill him, of course. But for some reason, that technique always seems to backfire. Suicide just isn't a positive act, I guess.
This time the party was trekking towards a dungeon off in the wilderness someplace. On the way, we spotted a pair of large humanoids hiding in obvious ambush. Chuckling in anticipation, we cast a few preparatory spells and continued down the path.
We weren't at all surprised when two giants jumped out and ran towards us, one wielding a tree, the other waving a tree with a massive spear-head on it. But we WERE surprised when the club-wielding giant crushed the bard flat as a pancake on the first blow, instantly rendering him deeply unconscious. We were also surprised when the ranger, who ran up to heal the bard, had his arm instantly maimed by the same giant.
The DM was rolling criticals.
LOTS of criticals.
You know, that would make a very funny t-shirt. A badly wounded character, or maybe a bunch of gravestones, and "The DM was rolling criticals." underneath it. :D
So our two most effective fighters were out of action, and all that was left was our archer and me. With nothing between me and two very large, very powerful, very angry giants. With huge honking weapons.
(Sorry, I'm reading Dibny's diary while I'm writing this.)
Anyway, the archer took a called shot to the club-giant's eyeball, and hit. Subtract one giant. He'd been injured a bit before by someone, and the eyeball hit was effectively a crit, but it still surprised me that he went down so easily.
Spear-giant came at me and missed with his first jab. There's a reason why I spent all my pre-game cash on magic armor and a magic shield! I have the best AC in the party, and that time it definitely saved me.
I moved in and gave the giant a solid whack with my morningstar. I'd boosted my strength and there were a few party buffs still working, so it did more damage than usual. Still, I was pretty sure that I was going to die. I momentarily considered running away instead of closing with the giant, but deserting your wounded buddies isn't a very good thing for a good cleric to do...and besides, the giant would totally be able to outrun me.
Not to mention that I wasn't all that interested in living, remember?
The giant hit me and brought me down to 12 hit points. I hit back, another solid one. This was ridiculous. How long was it going to take for me to die?
The latest hit made the giant mad, so he dropped his spear and closed in to grapple. Which provoked an attack of opportunity, which hit, and dropped him.
So after all that, I didn't die!
But the ranger's arm is seriously messed up, and we can't heal it properly in the field. And the bard has decided to retire to city living with his girlfriend - apparently he saw a light or something while he was one point away from death.
As for me, I don't know...I either need to find a voice for the cleric, or try a new character. Maybe a monk specializing in grappling. I could play him like David Carradine, but sillier. If that's possible.
