Disaster
Tonight Sebastian was working on making an Iron Beads kitty as a birthday present for his cousin. If you don't know what iron beads are, they're short and small plastic sections of tube in different colors. You place them on a plastic grid with lots of little blunt spikes on it - each bead fits on a spike - and when you're done, you iron them for about 30 seconds. They melt a bit and fuse together, and make a neat little craft-toy.
Anyway, Sebastian was working on the project all by himself. In typical 5-year-old fashion, he kept letting himself get distracted, but we kept pushing him back to it. Finally he had it looking quite good, with only two or three beads left to put in place. He came upstairs to tell us that he was almost done.
When we went back downstairs together, I couldn't help but gasp in shock. The bead grid had been knocked to the floor, and every single bead was off the grid. The whole project was ruined.
You never heard such a wail of utter despair from a boy. He flung his arms up in the air and his body to the ground, sobbing uncontrollably. Teri came running downstairs to see what had happened. As for me, well, as soon as I'd seen the wreckage the thought flashed through my mind that our cat Sara had done it; she often climbs up on furniture and pushes things down. I just hoped that Sebastian wouldn't make the same connection, or we'd have to deal with a boy with cat-mayhem on his mind.
Sure enough, within moments he'd reached the same conclusion. "Where's Sara? I want to DO something to her!" he shouted. And he went running around the house in a blind rage, looking for her. I chased him, my hands full of beads, calling out to Teri to stop him. If he reached Sara before we reached him...well, I didn't want to take the chance that he'd really hurt her.
Fortunately he didn't find her. But he told us, furiously, that when he did find her he was going to throw her out of the house forever.
In the meantime, Teri was working on reconstructing Sebastian's project as best she could.
While I was walking around the house, I found Sara on the cellar stairs. She honestly looked sad and guilty, to me. What do you think?
Eventually Teri completed the project - we had Sebastian place the last few beads so he could still say that he'd worked on it - and took it upstairs. Gave it a quick iron, and it looked beautiful. Our little guy was a bit less upset, so we took him up upstairs and I read Mister Penny to him until he fell asleep.

Sara has been naughty Hiding on the cellar stairs while upstairs Sebastian, broken-hearted at the destruction of a craft project, is sobbing and hunting for her with vengeance in mind. |
