Reading As Peck

Last night I was (as usual) reading to Sebastian. He's been demanding Tim books every night, specifically ones including Tim's rather silly friend Ginger.

I use voices when I read to Sebastian. After I've read a book aloud for the tenth time or so, I need to have a little fun with it - and using different voices is how I get my fun. Sometimes I get a little crazy with it, though. When I get too silly, Sebastian howls in protest, demanding that I use the right voices.

So there I was last night, reading a narrative section of Tim In Danger, when I found my voice moving towards...Gregory Peck. I've never actually tried to do Gregory Peck before, although I love impersonations of him; Joe Flaherty did a great one on SCTV, and of course Steve Landesberg did an amazing Peck (voice only) on Barney Miller.

I didn't expect to be able to do Peck well. It was just a whim. But to my surprise, it was easier to do than I thought. I particularly enjoyed the strange cadences, the odd little pauses and stresses. In a way, Peck impersonation has a lot in common with Shatner impersonation.

Sebastian stopped me, needless to say. But not as quickly as he usually does. Maybe he liked it. It was fun to do, anyway.

What I'll have to do is give some character in a different book a Peck voice. That will give me a legitimate excuse to do it again.
