Memorial Day 2005
(I started writing this a week ago Monday (Memorial day), got interrupted, and for some reason didn't get back to it until today.)
charibdis and
klyfix came over yesterday, and my still-non-LJ friend flight-of-stairs took the bus up from New York on Saturday. The plan was for a get-together and barbecue: hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, salad, and watermelon (yum!). It went well.
But as we were all sitting around the dinner table (Sebastian was upstairs in his room, asleep), I couldn't help hinting that it would be fun to play a roleplaying game. Finally (after I got really obvious)
charibdis called my bluff.
So I ran upstairs, dug through a bunch of old folders, found exactly five RuneQuest III character sheets and my RQ3 book, and started running them through the RQ3 sample scenario, "The Money Tree".
Well, first we had to generate characters, of course. I really hadn't planned to run a game. Rather than use the full-blown RQ3 character generation system, I had them roll 4d6 and take the best three results for all characteristics except INT and SIZ. For INT I had them roll 3d6, take the best two results, and add six; for SIZ, I let them roll 3d6, choose any two results, and add six.
For skills they could add:
50% to one skill
40% to two skills
30% to three skills
20% to four skills
10% to five skills
In some cases I let them take one or two of the 10% adds and combine them with a 40% or less add.
Then they each got 4 points of non-renewable Divine magic and 12 points of Spirit Magic. I had them pick out gods from the generic list, and did my best to speed the whole process along.
I should mention that Teri, my wife, had never played in a roleplaying game before. In fact, that was my primary reason for suggesting the game; it would be awfully nice if she roleplayed, at least a little.

Back to one week later, and I'll shorten this considerably: it was great! We only got halfway through the scenario before
klyfix and
charibdis had to leave (the commuter rail schedule is pretty unforgiving), but by that point Teri wanted them to stay - she even invited them to crash at our place overnight - so we could finish the scenario. They couldn't, but we'll try to all get together in a month or two to finish it off.
As things were left the party was standing in an almost pitch-black forest, looking at an enormous spider web blocking their path.
In the meantime I am looking into running a one-shot scenario for a local game group. We'll have to arrange babysitting for Sebastian, probably, but that shouldn't be impossible.
Now, I hadn't GMed for seven or eight years at least. And I have to say that I was amazed at how good it felt to be back in the GM's chair again. In fact, ever since that day I've felt up - way up. It's honestly amazing how much happier I've been in the last week, particularly considering that about 15% of my skin is bright red and itchy. I have a lot more energy, too; I've been able to some great workouts in.
I really missed GMing, I think, and the strange thing is that I never realized it.

Amazed
If I lived with two gamers, I'd roleplay every night! Or, well, several times a week anyway.
Awfully sorry about the TMJ, by the way. I think I have a spot of that myself now and then, but since I still have all my teeth, I'm sure it's nowhere near as bad for me as it is for you.
Re: Amazed
I don't play in Fz's bi-weekly game, as it's not a system I like, nor a setting I'm interested in and we don't get along in style of gaming at all. (He's finding problems with his style and his other players I suspect, since he's had 3 players bail along the way and thus only has 3 players at present).
The Sunday game is all I have right now.... with Kiralee and Cindy's schedules they don't have a whole lot of nights they are actually even both at home (Cindy is away on Wed and Thurs; Kiralee is often away on Many Mondays and Tuesdays; Fri is Fz's game every other weeek; Kiralee is often out on Sat or Cindy is; and Sunday night after having a 6 hour game session is pretty much relax time).
Keeping the Sunday game is often hard enough... Kiralee is often away in the AM on Sundays visiting Fz. otherwise she goes out with him after game on Sunday evening as his schedule is rough.
