Oblivion struggles
Oblivion has been weird.
For a long time the real restriction was money. I won't bore you with the details, but basically I was earning tons of experience points, but couldn't allow myself to level up because I needed to make money to train.
Every time I did level up, I was instantly ready to level up again. The experience meter was always maxed out, and still is.
I completed the Mage recommendation and staff quests; they were pretty easy. So I went and did some more on the main quest, my first entry into Oblivion (i.e. Hell).
Now, when I'd entered it with my first character, the fighter, it was tough - but the monsters were comparatively weak. When I first entered it with my much-higher-level mage, the monsters were HUGE and much more powerful. I nearly quit the game then. What's the point of improving your character if the opposition is always raised in power to match you? Talk about the Red Queen's race!
But I decided to give it a second try. I'd worked out a pretty effective technique based on the Invisibility spell. I turn invisible, and then hunt down enemies until they are separate - or at least spread pretty far apart. Then I get behind some monster, and blast it with a powerful touch spell (usually electricity). In almost every case, the result is lethal (for Necromancers, it's almost comic; they instantly fall down dead, and then let out an anguished grunt after they've apparently died). Then I cast invisiblity again before the creature's friends come and take revenge.
I have to admit that I really enjoy sneaking around invisibly and then blasting the shit out of bad guys without warning. :D
On rare cases I have to use two or three electricity blasts, but for those cases I also have a paralysis spell. The only problem comes with really powerful enemies who are immune to paralysis. In those cases, I go around a corner, summon a powerful creature to fight for me, go invisible, let the battle take place, and repeat as necessary.
It's also a problem if there are a lot of powerful creatures clustered together, of course. But that's rare. Often some of the creatures are summoned, and disappear after a while. It's also usually practical to simply skip those groups, and proceed on towards my goal.
Now I'm looking for better equipment; my helm in particular is a pathetic joke, and it looks really stupid too. I could enchant some equipment, of course, but I'm not 100% sure on the best way to do that, and I don't want to waste the soul stones needed for the enchantments.
I also need to figure out some more effective spells to create at the spellmaking alter. My biggest problem seems to be lack of magicka; I can only cast a couple of my most powerful blasts before running out. Unfortunately there's no way to raise magicka other than levelling, and that levels the monsters, too. I've already maxed out my Willpower and Intelligence, so I'm pretty much stuck.
