Halloween

Here's our Halloween, in three pictures.

If you look carefully, you'll see a last-minute addition to his costume: a phaser (from original Trek). I figured it would make him a kind of Firefly/Serenity character, although I've never seen either. I didn't have a gun to give him (and wouldn't have wanted to, even if I did), but the phaser seemed like an acceptable alternative.

We went to a friend's house to do our trick-or-treating in that neighborhood. It was lovely; a really nice place to trick or treat. Until some jackass who may have been physically over twenty but was mentally about 12 - and a mean twelve at that - jumped out at Sebastian from hiding, at a distance of about three feet. Wearing a very creepy-looking costume, things glued all over his face.

And so...

Sebastian's Halloween was basically ruined, after that. He spent the rest of the evening (most of it - the idiot had been at only the third house we went to) crying hysterically and begging to go home. He couldn't even approach several other houses, no matter how much Teri and I tried to soothe him. All he wanted was for me to hold him.

Here's the end of the evening.

...sigh...

Was the guy covered in blood and stuff? If so, he might have been costumed as a Reaver, which would have been ironic with Sebastian as a Browncoat (Firefly character)

I don't think it was blood, but I was in the back and it was a little hard to see. But he was an adult - twenty years old at least - jumping out and shouting at a group of three four-year-olds.

Not smart. But I was later told that he's not exactly the brightest bulb in the economy pack.

So I take it you like Firefly, then. That makes two people I know; maybe I should give it a shot. In my copious free time. :D

it's *excellent*. I think you'd love it.

Please! Yes! See Firefly/Serenity!

:)

The fact that you haven't yet costs you lots of geek points, you know. I wouldn't admit to that in public.

It is very possible that the guy was more clueless than malevolent, figuring that Halloween is about the scary and thus a little scare of the kiddies was not a big deal.

I think the funniest part is that you took a pic of your kid mid-cry.

Although, sucks that his halloween was ruined.

When he cries...

Time for me to once again reveal my age, I guess.

Did you ever watch the Bob Newhart Show? Not the later one where he was an innkeeper, but the one from the 1970s where he was a psychologist in Chicago?

It's one of my favorite shows - the writing is outstanding, and the actors were all great. And I really mean great. There has never been a better collection of character actors on any show, bar none. And they all got to play people with mental problems! :D

Anyway, there's a scene in which Bob's wife Emily (played by Suzanne Pleshette) is crying for some reason. That's unusual, because her character is generally quite strong and intelligent - far more so than most sitcom wives.

Bob is sitting next to her on the couch as she's crying, and explains that he has a terrible problem: whenever she cries, he has an overwhelming urge to laugh. He is, of course, cracking up as he's doing it - and desperately trying not to.

Which is just my way of using 168 words to explain that when Sebastian cries - when his face gets all scrunched up and his cheeks turn red - it breaks my heart, but it also gives me an overpowering urge to laugh like crazy. It's so cute that I can't stand it!

Of course comforting him comes first, but if Teri is there for him and I have the camera in hand, well, I can't help but record the cuteness for posterity. I actually have several photos of him crying last night, but in all the other ones he's being held by Teri, and she hates all pictures of her - so I couldn't use any of them.

My poor little guy.

Sorry it went badly... we had only about a dozen kids come by last night. I had placed a blank head mask (one of my unused spares from my painting project in the hall) on our front door along with the lights on to let them know we were accepting treaters. Of course someone stole the mask off the door before the night was over. Typical of our neighborhood, where encountering the smashed remains of pumpkins the day after is also quite common.

And only about half the kids had anything resembling a costume either.... all I can hope is that one of the ones who didn't have a costume grabbed the $3 mask from the door so they could have a vague mime costume for the night.
