SCTV Question for Brits

Okay, I know that the odds of getting an answer on this are really, really low. But a question came up recently that made me curious.

I need the opinion of one or more Brits who have seen SCTV - Second City Television. I'm not sure if SCTV was ever broadcast in the UK, which makes the issue even more problematic. Still, here's the question:

On SCTV, Dave Thomas did a number of different British regional accents. My question is, was he convincing? I mean, how convincing was he?

I know he spent some time in England when he was young, but I don't know how much.

For some reason I'm reminded of the many amusing "Amurrican" accents I've heard on British TV (particularly Benny Hill and Monty Python). Of course, those were comedies (what a newsflash), and I'm quite aware that in most cases, they were being played strictly for laughs.

I don't think it was ever aired here, only in Canada and the US. But if you can provide sample clips I could check their veracity! Violate copyright! Go on, you know you want to.

Hmm. Unfortunately I can't create them myself; my computer is a sad, sick, crippled old thing. But I'll see what I can find.

I must say, I'm a little surprised - even shocked - that SCTV was never show in the UK. It may not have been as popular as "Saturday Night Live", but most critics agreed that it was actually superior to SCTV. Plus it was far less deriviative of current events than SNL ever was.

Hell, they did parodies of "A Clockwork Orange" and "All Creatures Great and Small", among others, the latter under the name "All the Long-Leggedy Beasties". And now that I think of it, there were a lot of bits based on British culture; the Scottish Gourmet, "Benny Hill Street Blues" (although that was rather lame, I thought), and far too many more for me to recall.

Hmm. Now that they're out on DVD, maybe I'll be able to find some stuff floating around on P2P. Image
