I Produce A Rant

I had to write a letter to Salon about a review of the new version of The Producers. Yes, I feel strongly about this.
I haven't seen the movie, and I'm not going to. The original movie was perfect, so why on EARTH would anyone remake it?

Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. ZERO MOSTEL and GENE WILDER! That says it all. No offense to Nathan and Matthew, but they could practice for a hundred years and never be one-TENTH as good as Zero or Gene.

Now I'll have to put up with a media blitz of reviews that ignore the elephant in the room - that remaking the original version of The Producers is like remaking Casablanca (which was also done). Stupid, pointless, and utterly venial.

Side note: I couldn't agree more about Andrea Martin - she's wonderful, and all too often wasted. That seems to be the curse of all alumni of the brilliant and underappreciated SCTV, with the possible exception of Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara.

Well....

It's not as if some snot-nosed kid decided to remake the thing; Mel Brooks wrote and directed the original and he wrote the Broadway musical that the movie puts on screen. If anybody has the right to this, it's Mel Brooks himself. The problem, from what the Salon review says, is that the others involved in the thing apparently didn't understand that a movie isn't a stage play. Mind you, generally speaking it's not a good idea to remake a great original; did we really need a new "King Kong"?

On Andrea Martin: Hmm. Looking at her IMDB entry it looks like she's kept busy with a fair amount of voice work and other stuff but other than that not much in the way of major TV or movie things. Oh well....
