The Larger and bolder the names are represented on the map, and closer to the center, the more connected they are to each other, both in whether they appear on each other's friends lists, and where they are located.
Thus the folks outside the USA are further from the center (where you and the major bolded lj names are located).
It does seem to mess up a bit on folks who don't place their location in their profiles though.
