Almost got me

I'm not into sports, but my heart has been in Boston since I was very small. So of course I've always been a Red Sox supporter, at least in principle.

About ten years ago I had a boring temp job as a file clerk. No one minded if I wore a walkman radio, but about all I could get on it was AM. So I listened to WRKO. Back then they weren't quite as foamingly right-wing as they are now; Jerry King hated Mike Dukakis, but he was sometimes funny. I remember during one of his famous annual sex specials someone called in with a huge, incredibly long raspberry. The caller than proceeded to verbally "fart" an entire song into the phone - I think it was "My Country, 'Tis of Thee". Actually managed to carry the tune, too. After they hung up, Jerry said "And the amazing thing is, the whole time he did that he was masturbating." I cracked up.

But I also listened to Red Sox games on WRKO, which would amaze almost anyone who has ever known me. I'm no jock, but the games were actually sort of interesting.

But somewhere over the years I learned an important lesson: The Red Sox will never win. It took a long, painful time to learn, but eventually I finally accepted it. They will never win, although I don't know why. Once I realized that, I didn't let them get my hopes up.

Okay, I was a little bitter. I even thought up a funny plot for a murder mystery in which an enraged fan snaps and kills off every member of the Red Sox organization (actually, that could make a pretty good movie). But there's a certain small satisfaction in being right when I say "They won't win it."

But I have to admit that they almost got me this time. When the score was 4-0 in the 4th, I admit that I involuntarily let out a cheer and I almost dared to hope. But when the score reached 5-1, I knew that the Sox would lose it and went to bed. So it wasn't too much of a shock to wake up this morning and see that I was right.

You know, what amazes me is that Red Sox fans keep taking all this punishment. You'd think they'd eventually wise up! If I hear one more idiot say "Wait 'til next year" I'm going to buy a two-by-four.

On other fronts: I'm still fighting the cold. Mostly by taking lots of fluids, Zicam (a zinc gel), vitamin C, and Tylenol Sinus. Plus keeping the humidifier running day and night. It's all helping so far, I think, but the worst is probably still to come.

Game? Cold?

I guess I missed a lot of stuff while out of the country. Have to do some catch-up reading.

Red Sox game. I know you're like me, not that into non-roleplaying sports, but if you follow the Red Sox at all (which is hard not to do in this town), it was totally heartbreaking and/or infuriating. I hope Lois doesn't read this, because she will be disappointed to hear me say so. :D

As for the cold, ZiCam really seems to have worked. I'm breathing free and clear today. I never got anywhere near as horribly sick as Teri and Sebastian did, and believe me, I had to have caught any virus they had - Sebastian sneezed several times right into my face at close range!

You'll need a 4x6! You're a funny guy.
