"I HATE liberals"
Saw something that I just couldn't let go today: the featured columnist on Advicenators, MikeCFT, has a line in his profile that jumped out at me.
"Iam also a cadet for the NYPD and I HATE liberals."
I worried it over in my mind for a while, and finally sent him this question:

"I HATE liberals."?
No offense, but that really sounds bizarre, particularly from someone who presumably wants to serve and protect the public - a public which in NYC is probably at least 40% liberal, if not more.
How can you treat all citizens fairly and with respect - as you'll be sworn to do - when you've already decided that you hate many if not most of them?
To be honest, that sounds as crazy as if you'd said "Iam also a cadet for the NYPD and I HATE Italians" or "Iam also a cadet for the NYPD and I HATE construction workers". You're free to dislike individuals or even groups, of course - it's a free country. But just so you know, that sort of blanket condemnation comes off as really irresponsible and immature.
It doesn't enhance your credibility, and if you go into the NYPD with that sort of attitude, I believe it will make your life harder. Not because it's LIBERALS that you hate, particularly, but because hating a whole group - ANY group - will probably make your life a hell of a lot more stressful. Stress is already high enough for anyone on the force, without adding to it.
And it just doesn't make sense. I'm a liberal. I'm also a family man, a taxpayer, a voter, and a father. Most people who know me think I'm a decent guy. You don't know me, you've never met me. But you hate me.
Seriously, does that make sense to you?
I honestly mean no offense, by the way. And you don't need to worry that I'll down-rate your answer, or anything like that: I give you my word that I won't rate any reply you make AT ALL.
I thought long and hard before writing this. Maybe I shouldn't have bothered. But I thought it was worth a try.

I may not know very much, but I do know that HATE is a bad thing and since you hate liberals, that means you HATE me and I'm a really good person. I am sorry you feel that way, because despite one's political choice, some of us might just be some of the better people on the planet and I've been here now 61 years and I really enjoy it and try to live by that Golden Rule. Perhaps you're so into your 'thing' you don't see life as clearly as you could!?
Myself, I believe it takes all of us working together to create a better world.....
To create a better world liberals should have no power at all. We have real problems and we need real people to solve them. Doesnt America understand that we have people who will stop at nothing to see to it that an American is DEAD? This includes YOU my friend and Iam sorry if Iam not as sympathetic towards rights of people who think nothing of murdering Americans just for being American. Can you honestly imagine the state of things right now if Al Gore was President????? Christ we'd be like Israel having problems everyday. Typical liberal response- " OOOOOO Why do they hate us so much??? Lets start a committee and find out why while they continue to threaten to kill us." You know what they say...A Liberal is a Liberal until THEY get mugged and find out that the criminal has more rights than them which is absolutely ridiculous, but liberals continue to fight to save people and groups claiming "O they have rights too." With any luck there will never be another Democrat as President in the history of time. I mean for example, why do liberals believe that someone who has more money HAS to give it away to the ones more needy than him if he earned his money and its his? Last time I looked isn't that kind of like Socialism? and we live in a FREE ENTERPRISE system. Get real and get on the right wing. Anyone here who reads this and wants the HONEST TRUTH about what's going on...watch the Fox News Channel and read the NY Post. Not the liberal stations like ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN (The Clinton News Network), etc. Don't read the NY Times with its slogan- "All the news that's fit to print".

What this cadet doesn't understand is that America wouldn't exist if it wasn't for "liberals"* such as Jefferson, Paine, Franklin and indeed (to draw their inspiration) all the way back to John Locke.
Perhaps they should read some more.
* Yes, I realise that according to the times these people are more correctly described as radicals.

That's the sort of logic that elects Fascists. He's probably the sort who'd be perfectly happy under a Mussolini, really. Alas, there are plenty of people like that.
