Two

This morning Sebastian sobbed and sobbed in the back seat for most of the ride.

"I want to be two again! I want to be a baby!"

"Why?"

"Because I want to!"

I held him (while he was still in the car seat, of course; it was a sort of leaning hug) and sang to him.

When we got to the train station, he clutched my arm in a death-grip and cried "Daddy, stay!" over and over. I had to pull my arm loose, kiss him goodbye, and run like crazy to make the train. As I waved to him from the train doorway, I could see from his face that he was sobbing uncontrollably. I almost cried myself.

I'm not sure what all this is about. He hasn't cried like this in a long time, not more than a couple of times in the last couple of years. This "I want to be a baby" thing was relatively minor before before today; he'd mentioned it a few times, but he didn't seem to be that worked up about it.

Aw what a sweetheart. It seems like he's just afraid of losing the affection he gets from you and your wife. I can't imagine how he'd come to that conclusion, though, since you both are very loving and affectionate.

Does he have any kind of new responsibility? Has he spent more time alone lately?

I found out later that he has been a bit naughty in class, and one of the teachers had been shouting at him a lot. She was raised in a deaf or hard-of-hearing household, so she tends to shout anyway. But it upset Sebastian, and he didn't want to go to school.

Teri spoke to the teacher's supervisor, and things seem to be a bit better.

Brianna does that periodically where she does not want to grow up. She says she wants to be a baby and not a big girl. I guess it is normal.

It's probably just a stage he's going through. The other day I was saying, "Kindy's (that's what he calls himself) a big baby!" just to be teasing him and he yelled, "Kindy is a big boy!!!" Haha, then he started crying.

Crazy sobbing or normal? My older kid did that (circa 4) when she figured out what death was and that getting older meant your parents would kick it eventually.

Sebastian knows about death, although I haven't been able to keep some relatives from talking to him about heaven and "kitty heaven" (since I'm an atheist, this doesn't thrill me). It worries him; he's asked me not to die, ever, and I told him I'd do my best. :D

The crying wasn't quite hysterical, but it was pretty extreme, for him. And it lasted a long time. My poor little guy. Still, he's doing better now.
