The 10 Commandments

I don't get to watch The Daily Show or The Colbert Report much, because Sebastian has been pushing back on his bedtime. But sometimes I catch a clip online. And this is a testament, both to the brilliance of Steven Colbert and the incredible stupidity of Congressman Lynn Westmoreland, Republican of Georgia.

A Congressman who proposes legislation to post the Ten Commandments in government buildings, but when asked to list them...it's simply amazing.

Crap. I actually kind of liked that guy, because he hadn't felt the need so far to spew forth any stupid legislation like almost every Congressman ever elected to anything.

Ain't a good one left in the bunch anymore, I guess.

I hear that his seat is safe anyway, because it's a "family" seat. That's kind of depressing. Did you notice that he also thinks that Congress is part of the judicial branch?

Is it good or bad to know that there's at least one person in Congress who is your inferior in both intelligence and competence?

I'd say if you know of only one, you haven't been paying attention. There's a few hundred of them up there that are either too dumb to avoid the illogical stance of liberalism or too dumb to avoid letting their lives be ruled by superstitious hogwash and guys in funny collars.

And I just can't decide which ones I find more depressing.

Ya know, if I didn't know otherwise I'd think that bit was a total fake; can anybody be so dumb as to go on a program where they will surely be made to look the fool? Did he actually know what he was doing? What did he think he'd accomplish? A Congressman really doesn't have to talk to anybody other than his local press occasionally, and unless they're trying for national prominance probably shouldn't talk to anybody but them most of the time.

I probably can't name the Commandments myself, but I think I can get closer than he did.

Another amazing thing: Congressman Westmoreland is a leader of the group that's blocking renewal of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. He doesn't know the difference between the judicial and legislative branches, and he doesn't know the 10 Commandments, but he knows who should be allowed to vote - or not.

The official objection is to provisions aimed at certain Southern states with a proven record of disenfranchisement. It's pure gravy that the expiration of the VRA would disproportionately disenfranchise Democratic voters - of course!
