The Red Queen's Race

I'd hoped to do several posts today, but I just haven't had time. So this is a reminder to myself for the next few things I wanted to write about:

  • The D&D game

  • Sebastian's birthday disaster

  • The Glaxo avian flu vaccine

...and while I'm at it, I'll record that today for the first time in my life I cooked broccoli. It came out pretty well, but was a little overdone; seven minutes of steaming was a minute or two too much for the double-handful I cooked.

(I've lost another two pounds in the last two days, despite being in the "keep trim" phase and having diary and more carbs. The diet is going great.)

Broccoli may be incredibly healthy but the only way I find it palatable is in Chinese cooking. Most anything can be palatable in Chinese cooking. :)

Or there's broccoli and stilton soup: chop your broccoli with some onion and fry it with a lid on to keep the steam in for a few minutes. Put it aside, then make a cheese sauce (butter + flour to make roux, then add in milk and grated cheese with choice of seasoning), combine the lot and dilute with milk or stock.

Yes, it's basically a livelier, but diluted, cauliflower cheese. On the other hands, while delicious, it is basically calories in a dish....

For some reason that reminds me of a poem by Thomas Rockwell called "Stilton Cheese and Silence", but I'm not sure why. :D

I don't eat cheese, but I find steamed broccoli an absolutely delicious tool for eating soy sauce. Put a well-cooked hamburger and a plate of broccoli in front of me along with a bowl of soy sauce, and I'm a happy man - as happy as I used to be in the old days with a big plate of french fries and ketchup.

Either way, the hamburger is de rigeur of course. :)
