Where Am I?

If you're wondering where my posts are, I've been doing more and more of them as friends-only posts in recent months. I don't expect to ever make my entire journal friends-only, but at least 20% of it has not been public, and I expect that trend to increase.

If you want to be added to my friends list, email me or make a comment on a public post of mine or something and I'll almost certainly add you.

I just want to double check that I am on your friends list, because your posts have been rather sparse recently.

You're definitely on my list. I just haven't been writing that much lately; I've been pretty busy. Let me see...I've done seven posts so far this month, altogether.

Hey! Mongoose RQ just came out today, I'm holding a copy in my hot little hands. Have you picked it up yet? Whadda ya think?

It will be a cold day in hell before I contribute one thin dime to any project that could benefit Greg Stafford. You know about the tangle I had with him, right?

Fortunately from what I saw during the playtest (and from everything I've heard from people who bought MRQ), it seems that Mongoose pretty much lived down to my incredibly low expectations and produced a crappy D20/RQ hybrid. I hope that Chaosium brings out Deluxe Basic RolePlaying soon and kicks their asses from here to Sheboygan. Unlikely though that may be.

So what do YOU think of the MRQ system? I'm honestly curious.

No, I didn't hear about that. I know that when Mongoose first started taking playtesters there was a LOT of HEAVY conversation you were involved with on RPGnet. I remember you being approved for round one of the playtest, but I don't see your name in the credits so I'm thinking you either quit or got quitted.

What happened between you and Stafford?

About MRQ... I like it so far. I'm not getting a d20 vibe off of it at all. Strike Ranks are a little different between MRQ and RQ3, skills are divided into Basic and Advanced skills, and above 100% skills are handled differently. But it seems to be well written and well thought out, and being new it's going to open RQ up to a slew of new gamers. With the OGL behind it, I think we're going to see some good stuff. I know my little publishing venture -- which has been on hold the last few months -- is going to re-tool for some MRQ games.

I'm pretty optimistic.

Hey, I just noticed you'd been purged from my friends list; I re-added you, for what that's worth.

Sadly, I don't have much hope for Chaosium anymore. With MRQ released under the OGL, and HPLs works under public domain, I think they should be afraid that even their flagship game -- Call of Cthulhu -- is no longer safe.

I think it sucks they didn't get the RQ rights back, and I think it sucks that because of open licenses and public domain laws someone could do a better Call of Cthulhu than Call of Cthulhu, but it is what it is, you know?

Ok, so now that I've read the book a little more, I can see some minor d20 influences, specifically with regards to the Persistence and Resilience skills (something akin to d20s saving throws) and with Free Attacks and Riposte (something akin to d20s attacks of opportunity).

That said, I don't see any problem with them at all; AoO were never a big gripe for me in d20 (actually I kinda like 'em) and while a saving throw equivalent shouldn't be a skill, I'd rather see them do what they did than add some other, VERY non-RQ mechanic into the works.
