The Big Dig (in Woonsocket)

They've dug out the front yard, and the job turned out to be a bit bigger than expected; they had to jackhammer up the basement as well, so as to completely clear the pipe out from both sides.

Fortunately it isn't going to cost any more. I'm taking photos, and will try to post them later.

The joys of jackhammers in the basement.... been there and it is most unpleasant. Best wishes getting thru all this with your sanity intact.

Actually, they've already cemented up the basement. They're filling up the hole outside right now. I've seen the pipe, and it looks beautiful - they even changed the pipe that they put in three years ago!

The new pipe is blue. And they added another clean-out outside, in the front yard; apparently the code requires it. The inspector already checked everything out, and it passed inspection. By all accounts, Woonsocket inspectors are really tough, too. Apparently someone died doing one of these jobs a few years ago, and ever since then the inspectors have been absolute sticklers.

The cost isn't more because the clay pipe going out to the sewer main is in perfect shape. They'd planned to replace it all the way out to the sidewalk, but instead they left some of it in place and replaced the entire cast iron pipe from inside the basement instead. So all of the cast iron is gone.

It really does look great.

Sounds great; better not jinx it. :)
