Is LJ Lame?

I saw a letter in the Metro a few days ago, and it said something like "Remember LiveJournal? Remember when lots of people used to be on it?"

And they weren't trying to boost LJ. The subject was something else entirely. They were using LJ as an example of something that was utterly lame and dead.

So should I have a MySpace? I don't think I like that idea. There was an extensive series of articles and letters in the Metro about "creepy old guys who prowl MySpace looking for hot young girls". Ick!

I hatehatehatehatehate the idea of being lumped into that category, even by the loosest association. Don't even get me started.

Besides, MySpace confuses the shit out of me. It gives me a headache just to look at it.

But is LiveJournal really a dead zone? Should I be somewhere else?

Livejournal has millions of users, it's not dead.

Are you kidding about the angsting over this part? :P

I don't know.

Which is, in itself, troubling.

(Millions of users and yet I have such a small flist...I don't want to think about that...) Image

It couldn't hurt to post a bit more in the realm of positive or informative stuff. I know the world has had you down and feeling on the ropes for months, and that's not something you can do much about, but it does tend to keep people from rushing in and wanting to chat a whole lot.

I mean, look, I know there's a dark lord on the throne. I know he's stealing away our rights.

I know that money is tight (I'm not exactly rolling in dough here, I've got the Basement of Doom hanging over us, Kiralee's on Unemployment and Cindy's job may disappear when the snow comes because she can't do the commute she's doing and my health is such I couldn't pull a fulltime job if I wanted to).

But if that was all I wrote about in my journal from day to day I'm pretty sure I'd not have the level of readership I got.

Positive and informative...hmm. Unfortunately, I'm drawing a blank. Hadn't realized that I was being that negative, though.

Hmm.

Humor helps too.... maybe some posts about what you're reading these days? I know you're well read (I remember the huge piles of books in every room in your old apartment).

Or what web comics you read?

The Metro is hardly the height of journalistic integrity or knowledge. I would doubt anything they post regarding popular culture to an extreme.

Myspace - a bad idea. It's not a place to really blog/write it's an exhibitionists playground for the the teen set. Avoid it like the plague, as it's just a tool for mr Murdock to manipulate the young towards his own political and social profit desires.

I think LJ is maturing, as is the people on it. Remember, those who judge 'society' judge it based on the 15-30 year olds and where they hang out and do things, as they are considered to have all the expendable income, not the older folks like us.

We don't count in their numbers. It's why we'll never be picked as a nielson household again... we're now all past 35 in my house and this over the hill and unimportant to advertisers selling crap.

I don't think LJ is dead at all... and I'd miss you.

I don't terribly much give a fig about being on a cool site or whatever. Granted that, as I've noted, I'm not trying to talk to the general public here but I'm using this as a substitute for the "Hey, look at the cool thing!" and "Here's the latest boring thing I did!" emails I used to sent out. About the only things not fitting that was the email from one cartoonist about a comment I made and a couple of replies from Shaenon Garrity of "Narbonic" and as I'm fairly active in the forums for that comic those might not count. Hmm, and she and her web comic are Cool and she has an LJ so LJ can't be that uncool, right? :)

I mean, it all kinda depends on what you're wanting to do here. This probably isn't the place to talk to The Masses, but frankly at this point there just isn't such a place save perhaps for the few bloggers who managed to get a following and even they really aren't speaking to more than a limited number of people. Who do you want to talk to?

The whole My Space thing...

I will NEVER get a MySpace page.

That is all.
