Vacation/Sick

Long ago I arranged to take today as a vacation day. Teri was going to go to the doctor, and I figured I might as well take the day to watch Sebastian; I have plenty of vacation time. And I expect to get more, since I'll be reaching my ten-year anniversary at work in a few months, and will get the final increase in my vacation time. I think it will be five weeks.

As it happened, my father was coming down today to check out our wiring as well, so I'd get to see him, too. All in all, a good situation.

Teri let me sleep in for a couple of hours, which was nice. Sebastian was being awfully cute. My father arrived in the morning, and - whoops, don't think I've written about this yet.

About four weeks ago the circuit breaker for our stove, refrigerator, and kitchen light/ceiling fan tripped. The outlet we use for our toaster oven and coffee machine was on the same circuit.

I should explain that since our house predates electrical wiring (1835), it's a bit of an oddity, electrically speaking. Since the walls are solid planks & plaster, without the internal gaps in the walls found in all houses built in the last hundred years, the wiring runs in conduits along the outsides of the walls. In fact, there are two conduits which actually run outside the house, taking electricity up to the second floor!

We spent several thousand dollars to have the electrical system upgraded in a lot of the house, and to have the dangerous parts of the old system removed, but there still are some points where the old wiring is still in use. It's not dangerous, but it meant that we weren't sure what to do when the circuit breaker tripped.

It didn't trip just once, of course. If it had, I wouldn't be writing this. It tripped over and over. So I called my father.

He has his doctorate from MIT, but that's in chemical engineering. He was trained as an electrician in the Turkish army, though, and he's wonderfully handy. I just wish I'd inherited his ability.

Incidentally, during the past month we had hooked the fridge and oven to a new outlet in the kitchen. A new light that we'd had put in when we bought the place was on the same new circuit, and still worked. It was inconvenient to have heavy extension cords across the floor, but we lived with it. We unplugged the cats' water fountain, and used it as a water dish.

Anyway, my father checked it out and it turned out that the wiring for the circuit was actually loose at the point were it attached to the breaker itself. He tightened it up, and now it's fine. So that's taken care of.

But back to my original point. I took the day as a vacation day, and inevitably, spent it sick and in a lot of pain. I think it's food poisoning; no nausea, fortunately, but incredible pressure in my intestines. Once again it feels as if someone had stuck a high-pressure air hose in my guts, and turned it on full blast - with no outlet for the pressure. The gurgling and air sounds are incredibly loud and bizarre.

In the last hour or so it has gotten a bit better, but all in all it was a VERY uncomfortable afternoon and evening.

Sigh. I need to catch up on my mail, but I'm too tired and sick. Maybe tomorrow.

It's not a vacation day, so I'm bound to be feeling better.
