Home

The snow this morning was like damp sand; I've never seen anything quite like it. There was only about an inch of it, although it was still coming down. In my sneakers, it wasn't slippery at all.

Once we got on the road, though, things got bad - we were sliding all over the place We got about half-way through the center of town, and turned back. Too many close calls.

So we're all home now. I'm baking a coffee cake from scratch. I used up every speck of sugar in the place (we were low), and I'm very curious to see how it comes out - this is a new recipe for me.

So, if you still remember, how did it come out?

It was pretty awful, dry and unpleasant. I threw most of it away. Almost every time I try a recipe from the Betty Crocker cookbook, it's a disappointment.

I haven't had a really good coffee cake in decades. My mother used to make wonderful ones with just Jiffy or Bisquick, but I can't duplicate them. I'm a pretty good cook and baker, within my limited range, but my mother has a real gift for cooking (and so did her mother, come to think of it).
