The boy, continued

Just a bit more to catch up with about the boy. Then, I hope, I can start catching up on my flist.

Boardwalk

Last weekend we visited Teri's uncle and aunt on Cape Cod. On the way home, we stopped and took a stroll on the beach boardwalk in Sandwich. It was Teri's mother's idea.

I can't tell you how insanely fucking cold it was. I lost all feeling in my hands, even though I was wearing gloves. Teri's whole face was wet with tears from the cold. And it didn't help that we were dressed lightly.

Nonetheless we took a long walk all the way down to the ocean. Sebastian complained about the cold, but when we got to the ocean he insisted on throwing some rocks into the ice-cold ocean.

And then we went back to the car and thawed. Damn, it was cold.

I'm really only writing about it as a memory for my crazy little boy, if you were wondering. :D

Last Night

I was up really late last night, writing angry political screeds on Salon and the Washington Post. I was also worrying, because (as I mentioned recently) it was hot as hell.

I turned off the furnace and went to bed at 12:30. Sebastian was in our bed again, his head towards the foot of the bed. Fortunately there was enough room for me to push in on the very edge of the bed and lie down.

Sebastian wasn't sleeping well; the heat was getting to him. As I pushed in, he flopped around on the bed. In the process, he planted an elbow directly into Teri's stomach. She'd been sound asleep, but responded with a distinct "Ooof!" (nonetheless staying mostly asleep through the incident, I think).

Sebastian flopped in the other direction, and ended up lying across my shins. Apparently I'm less comfortable than a mattress, because moments later my little guy sat up, then wormed his way to the end of the bed.

"What are you doing, baby boy?" I asked.

"Going to my bed," he said, and toddled off. Not five seconds later I heard an absolutely heart-rending little cry of heartbreak from his room. It was so compelling that I had to jump up and run over there:

"What's the matter, Sebastian?"

"I don't have any water!"

"Really? Wait, sure you do - here it is!"

"It's hot water and there isn't much left!"

I checked, and he was right. So I reassured him and ran downstairs to fill his cup with ice and cold water. When I got back he drank some, lay down, and with a kiss he went to sleep.

I already know that I'll miss these times like crazy when he's older.

Did you ever have a birthday party?

Yes, with my family at my brother's house.
