Wii video

[livejournal.com profile] stairflight visited us over the weekend. We spent a fair amount of time surfing online with the Wii. And I was surprised to see that suddenly, YouTube videos could be played by the Wii's beta browser. That definitely wasn't possible two or three days before.

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] stairflight found a couple of videos of Allan Havey's old Night After Night late-night talk show from Comedy Central at YouTube. We used to watch that show back when it was on the air, about fifteen years ago. It was really funny and different.

I wish that it was available on DVD, or that more of it was up on YouTube. But so far, this is all there is.

Ooh, wait a second, there are a bunch of other Night After Night videos there after all. I guess they're probably listed under "Night After Night" instead of "Alan Havey". Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Scz6O6ktffU&mode=related&search=

That was during a period when they could experiment and do weird stuff. I have some memory of a Night After Night (I didn't watch it that much, I admit) where Havey had some kind of battle with the Higgins Boys and Gruber who had another show.

These days there seems to be a lot of demand for profits from the assorted networks both cable and broadcast, and thus anything experimental or different has to be either a quick hit or really cheap. Why on Earth does a "Deal or No Deal" exist? It's cheaper than a real show. And hours and hours of TV time are "Paid Programming" (extended ads), and not just late at night. I'm not sure if there is a cure for this, although bringing back some kind of rule against program length commercials might help; why should a station get away with broadcasting ad stuff that is usually questionable on some level rather than an actual program, even if it's just an old bad movie? Oh well....
