CDC Survey

Answered a 20-minute phone survey from the Center for Disease Control this afternoon. They surprised me when they asked how often we go to church. What does that have to do with disease prevention? I wonder if the Bush people have been tinkering with the CDC mission and politicizing the bureaucracy. Wouldn't surprise me.

A Church service is a large social event in an enclosed space; one is in there for an extended period of time. A good place to be exposed to germs. And certain rituals will add to that; what some Protestants would call Communion has food stuffs pass about for instance, and church socials and potlucks are pretty common. So it's not that unreasonable to ask about that.

They're missing, of course, asking about Role Playing and the tendency to consume large amounts of unhealthy things as a group. :)

I have heard of a church-health link, but it was more along the lines of: People who attend church regularly feel a sense of community and belonging, and experience less anxiety, depression, etc., and the related health problems those conditions exacerbate. It is a mental health/quality of life thing. Being happily married is supposed to provide the same kind of benefit.
