Puff

My little guy fell in love today.

I'd made a new CD for him a week or so ago; in fact, I'd mentioned it here. It started with four Harry Belafonte songs, which he loved. Next came a couple of Tom Lehrer songs, from the Electic Company. Sebastian went nuts for those too, and christened the "LY" song "The Vampire Song".

But I'd included a bunch of other songs I'd listened to as a boy on the CD. One of them was Peter, Paul, and Mary's "Puff the Magic Dragon". And today Sebastian totally fell in love with that song. He started singing it again and again - quite nicely - and then started making up a new verse. It began "Puff, the magic dragon, I wish that he was real" - and as far as I know, that's as far as it went.

Sebastian also told us he was going to do something secret, and was rather mysterious about it. Eventually he told us that he wanted us to take him to the seashore today! It's a horribly cold and windy day, so Teri asked him why. I quickly guessed "So you can meet Puff, right?" and he shook his head yes. He also told us that he wanted to fly, and it didn't take long to figure out that he wanted to fly on Puff.

It was just so cute.

He's asleep now. I'm listening to "Puff" on indefinite repeat. And I remember how I felt as a little boy...I wanted to meet Puff, too.

Would you believe Dagwood likes "Puff, the Magic Dragon" also.? :)

As I recall, the song is kinda sad, isn't it? The kid grows up, thus abandoning Puff who no longer has a reason to live and offs himself...uhh, okay not quite but still, it is a sad song at base.

Actually Puff doesn't kill himself. He "slips into his cave" at the end, but it's probably a stretch to say he dies. Apparently there was a last verse to the original poem about another child finding Puff, but that was lost at some point.

It makes sense, though; Jackie Paper grew up, but his son or daughter would probably come along some day to play with Puff...

Well, yeah, Puff doesn't kill himself; I was trying (and apparently failing) to do humorous exaggeration. But at base the song is about things we love and childhood but ultimately outgrow unless we're fortunate enough to be Geeks. :)

(The Silly Person in me thinks that back when the song was written some adults probably met Puff with a little chemical assistance.:))

(Klyfix also recalls that helicopter gunships in the Vietnam War were sometimes called Puff the Magic Dragon. Huh, a quick online look says that was actually the AC-47 plane, a C-47 retrofitted with big ol' gatling guns that was called a "Dragon Ship" by the Viet Cong. Go figure.

Brianna loves Puff too. I have sang it to her at bed time from time to time for more than 8 years and she still asks for it.
