RRRRRIP!

The tape on my back came off yesterday. Actually, it wasn't too painful.

I was afraid that the test had been compromised. I'd told them that I sweat like crazy, but they didn't seem concerned. The tape did detach, but only on one side; only one of the columns was rendered questionable. Apparently that's okay.

By the way, wearing a 2'x1' patch of tape on your back and shoulderblades is as uncomfortable as you're probably thinking. It sucked. And it felt good to get the tape off.

When they started writing on my back with surgical markers, though, it was a pretty damn odd feeling. Ever worn a cast? Remember the weird feeling of hypersensitivity when it came off? That's what it felt like. And to be honest, it kind of hurt. Absolutely nothing that I (or anyone else) couldn't handle, of course, but it wasn't a comfortable feeling.

It was a lot of writing, too! I made the joke which I was sure everybody made (in fact, the doctor made the same joke when he came in later): it felt like I was some sort of super-deluxe tic-tac-toe board. But it's more like a sketched-out double checker board. They'd warned me to bring an old t-shirt, and it's a good thing that I did. All the ink stained the hell out of that shirt.

Anyway, my back had been burning, itching, and sweating under all that tape. I'd suspected that I was having a reaction, and when the doctor mentioned "pustules" as he was looking at my back, I had to ask. There are a couple of areas which may have shown a reaction; they can't be sure until they look at them again tomorrow. But apparently I have an incredible case of razor burn, combined with irritation from the tape.

I'll be a little sorry after my final visit, tomorrow. The people there seem awfully nice, and the doctor is definitely a fellow geek.

And of course the first thing they'll figure out is that you are allergic to the tape :-)

Sorry, but having relatives who have just that problem I know all too well that it's a good 20% chance that you'll react to it....

So, umm, what did you end up being allergic to? It seems like a real hassle to find out, although I'd think that as I am utterly unhairy there'd not be much need for back shaving if I wanted to find out myself. I don't have much sign of allergies really, although it would be kind of a hoot if my depression was actually a reaction triggered by something I was eating and without that I'd be a jovial extroverted and self-confident sort. Then again, I'd probably be impossible for anybody to stand. :)
