Wisconsin
Obama just won Wisconsin, and not by a nose. CNN just showed Hillary speaking; as with the previous bunch of losses, she didn't even refer to it. It looks like she's just going to pretend that it didn't happen. That's an interesting approach; I wonder if it's what her advisors recommended, or if that's just how she prefers to deal with setbacks?
I also saw Obama's victory speech. Now, here's something funny: I'd actually never seen him speak before! For all the talk about how people are mesmerized by his fancy speechifyin', I'd never listened to him speak previously. But I have to say that while a professional actor could have gotten a bit more out of what he was saying, he did it more than well enough. And far more important was this: I was surprised that he was saying the right things, intelligent things, and covering the points that I wanted him to make.
I've never gotten into the mob mentality; I've always felt apart from the crowd. I think that may have something to do with my nonverbal learning disorder. So I wasn't swept up in a mad emotional rush. But I was honestly impressed and surprised that he addressed the issues that needed to be addressed, instead of dealing out the same old meaningless crap that has become de rigueur in American politics. And I got a good laugh from his line "America's problem isn't a lack of good ideas. It's that Washington has become the place where good ideas go to die."
Watching, for the first time I believed that he could be smart enough - and understand people well enough - to win the nomination and even the general election. I even have a little more hope that he might manage to take the country a long step back towards the place we need to be. It won't be easy, of course; the Augean stables were nothing compared to the state that America and the world environment are in today. The odds are high against anyone being able to make a major, positive impact in the Presidency.
But you know...I think that maybe he could. And I think he would try.
