Holding on

I got a call from an emergency room doctor at Speare, where they x-rayed my elbow. The NP didn't see it, but apparently there is a bone chip that was knocked loose from my elbow. He can't be sure, but he said that it didn't look like the sort of chip that they'd operate for; I didn't ask him, mind you, he volunteered that.

I have an appointment to see an orthopedist on Friday. I guess I'll find out more then.

In the meantime, I'm still in a fair amount of pain if I move my arm much. The pain is as much in my bicep and other muscles as in the elbow itself. I wear the sling for most of the day, of course, as the doctor recommended. I've already lost a lot of strength in my arm. I'm taking massive doses of ibuprofen (as recommended by the doctor) and Vicodin as needed, which is rarely. I can't straighten my arm out all the way because the muscles hurt too much, but I can stretch it more each day and it hurts a little less. Still I don't stretch or move it much because they told me not to. Icing does help a little. Unfortunately I keep bumping it on door frames, and that hurts a lot.

It really sucks using only one hand on the computer.

I have to admit that I'm a little nervous. I'd rather avoid surgery, but if they say it's necessary to regain full function, I'll do it. I hate that I have to wait for another three days.

I'm sorry that you are in so much pain right now. I'm glad to hear, though that you do have some range of motion and are willing to do what it takes to regain full function.

For now, don't think about the might be's and just focus on the what is. Keep trying to stretch your arm a little bit each day to keep the muscle from 'freezing' up on you (the pain you feel in the bicep and tricep area is most likely from not being able to stretch it properly).
