...and still more...

Last Saturday I bundled Sebastian in the car and took him (and the computer) to the fabled Mar Vista in Marshfield. An old friend there had volunteered to take a crack at fixing my computer. It has been more than two months now, and I can testify that life without a computer is very different; not necessarily bad, exactly, but different.

It's pretty inconvenient at times, though, and there was a lot of stuff on my C drive that means a lot to me - photos of Sebastian, years of writing, music, email, you name it - and it was time to get it fixed.

We had a lot of fun at Mar Vista. Sebastian got to pat a miniature black goat, which was the high point of his day. But on the way home I got an unexpected call.

It was my old friend, and the news was not good. The hard drive was dead. Less than two years old, and it was gone. Everything gone, a huge chunk of my life. Some stuff is backed up here and there on CDs, but most of them are unlabelled or damaged. So, well, I'm screwed. A series of computer-related disasters has taken away an enormous chunk of my life.

For some reason I'm not that bothered by it, though. I wonder why?

Yet another afterthought...

When Sebastian and I went into Scott's house, Sebastian had quite a lot of fun...until he peered across the room and got a very troubled look on his face. "Scott, you put it away?"

Me: "Huh? Sebastian, what are you talking about?"

"Take it away!"

I followed his gaze and saw a fanged plastic skull-mask on top of a pile of stuff. Scott saw what was going on and covered it up, but that wasn't enough for Sebastian. He was tearing up and ran to me with his "scared baby" face on. Arms up, "Carry me!" and a moment later I had him out of the house and away from that scary mask. Image

I would say to not give up on it yet. There are places that specialize in retrieving info from hard drive, even messed up hard drives.

Yeah, but don't they require your Immortal Soul for that?
Or at least a lot of cash...
