Notes to self, post-Arisia

- Sebastian loves crafts. We should do them at home. But we don't. Probably because there are no other children for him to do them with; it's much more fun with other children. What should we do?

- A lot of the panels were pretty redundant. I should suggest (or log, if Arisia isn't accepting suggestions now) ideas now, while I remember what people were interested in. One panel idea: "I Married A Mundane". Another: a panel for non-fans who are attending Arisia in the company of a fan SO. That way they could commiserate about the geeks. :D

- Heinlein is an endless topic of debate.

When I was a kid I did all sortsa things like bug jars, those 200 in 1 electronic kits and crystal radios from Radio Shack, those wooden cutout dinosaurs that we used as templates to make outta cardboard, a magnifying glass, teach him how slings work and make a trebuchet, paper boats in the tub, there's lots to do out there.

Oh... and hot air baloons from oiled paper bags and a candle, tornado in a jar using 2-2liter bottles, magnets, springs, a hammer & nails, a saw, rope, chalk, dominoes, and Jigzone.com has a 24,000 piece puzzle.

I did crafts as a kid - almost any craft. I did them at home with my parents, or my gran, not with other kids. One advantage I can see to not having other kids around is that there's no peer pressure about some things being "cooler" than others - if he happens to end up liking embroidery, there's no-one to tell him that it's "girly". Likewise there was no-one to tell me that Meccano was for boys. (Combining the two can get quite interesting).

I loved doing models when I was little. Abything: cars, boats, planes, etc. My dad spent hours driving around trying to find glue that wouldn't get me stoned, haha. That's not really the kind of craft you can do with another person anyway, and IIRC there are different skill levels so the craft can grow with him. :)

Another good craft is taking leftover household items - milk cartons, paper, cardboard - laying them out with some scissors (with your help if hes too young for that, obviously) and having him create something. You could have him make whatever he wants, or have him try to recreate something from one of his favorite books or something.
