Saturday

Let's see...Teri and Sebastian picked me up on Friday, and we stopped at L.L. Bean. We spent more than I'd planned. We got a reasonably-priced backpack for him, and got it monogrammed with his initials for an additional $6; Teri hated the style Sebastian picked, and I have to admit that it's fairly awful. But he needs to be able to make his own choices and his own mistakes at least some of the time.

We also bought sneakers for him. And when I saw that I could get a good pair of sneakers for myself for $54...well, that's about as good a price as you'll find outside of Wal-Mart or Payless. And those ultra-cheap sneakers fall apart incredibly quickly. These sneakers have the L.L. Bean guarantee.

On the other hand, I'm not sure what that guarantee means. It doesn't mean that I can bring back a worn-out pair of sneakers back ten years from now and get brand new ones, I don't think. My understanding is that it's a lifetime warranty against defects. Apparently my North Face backpack has that too, although of course I didn't get that through L.L. Bean.

I have to admit that the store was pretty cool. We'll probably go back once in a while. Oh, as we came out of the store, huge black clouds swept over us and we were suddenly in a downpour. Cold rain blasted me before I could get into the car.

On Saturday, Sebastian and I dropped Teri off at the animal shelter this morning. We went to his karate class, and then went to the carnival. He went on a lot of rides, and he and I went up in the Ferris wheel again. It was fun...

Later, we went to the mall; Teri had to return some clothes she'd bought. Sebastian was dying of boredom. I amused myself by warning him that this was how life was when you're a grownup. He nearly ran away to the Toy Vault several times, but I managed to keep him from totally escaping.

As we left Lane Bryant, we were hit by a very loud noise. A band was performing! They were sponsored by a country music station (CAT Country, 98.1, I believe). The singer was Katie Armiger. Not bad; she covered an old Kansas or Journey song, and Teri and I laughed. Sebastian was covering his ears from the noise.

Teri and Sebastian ate a quick dinner in the food court (I wasn't hungry, so I just had some pretzel sticks and frozen lemonade from Antie Annie's; they were surprisingly good), and then Sebastian went for a ride on the carousel. He sat on the infamous teacup seat, and spun so fast that he was almost a blur.

What else? Oh yes. We stopped at a bookstore. I bought a copy of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe for Sebastian, and bought a large paperback copy of Bored of the Rings for myself; I guess it was re-issued in the last year or two. It must have flopped badly, because it was marked down to $4 and in the "buy one get one free" rack. Teri bought a couple of books; I was shocked at the prices.

Lastly, we stopped at a DVD store. I wanted to see - just to see - how much season 2 of Saturday Night Live cost. I assume it would be $60-$70, the same as season 1. And that was the original marked price. But it was on sale, marked down to $24.95. So were season 3 and season 4. I went a little crazy, so I bought season 2 and season 3. I'm looking forward to seeing some of those classic Franken and Davis sketches, among other things.

And now I should get some sleep. Whew! It's late!

I don't know about the LL Bean guarantee when it comes to sneakers, but I do know that we bought a wool sweater at LL Bean once. After having and wearing it for something like five years, G snagged it on a piece of metal and tore a hole in it. We figured we had nothing to lose so walked into the store in Maine with the sweater and showed it to them. They did not have the same sweater in stock anymore but gave him the option of several others to replace it. We left with a brand new sweater.

That's cool! I have to admit that I might feel weird about making a claim on the warranty, myself. Unless it was clearly a manufacturing defect.

Did they ask you any questions about the sweater?

No questions asked, Not even how did that happen.
We just took it in and they gave us a new one. It was a "what have we got to lose" moment that worked out.

On whole season DVD sets: It helps when something is sufficiently mass-market that the price ends up lower. I note that anime season or series box sets tend to be more expensive than regular stuff; the most extreme I recall being for Blood+ (a sort of vampire anime) where the nice people at Sony seem to think that over $100 is a good price.

There's an Auntie Annie's in South Station; I've had pretzel dogs from them a few times, although not for some time since my mobility has been a bit limited. They're good. Oddly, I've yet to have a proper soft pretzel (to the best of my possibly flawed memory at least); not sure why.

I've been to the Antie Annie's in South Station too - but not for a while.

Do you happen to remember if they had frozen lemonade? I was wondering if they only had it in Rhode Island, since it's an RI thing. Although slush is pretty much the same thing anyway. The machines at the Emerald Mall AA's said "Dutch Ice", which I'd never heard of...

Hmm, I don't recall; I wasn't paying much attention to beverages alas when I stopped there.

I took a brief look to see if I could find "Dutch Ice" via search engine and got references to the Annie's stuffs nutritional value, hockey, ice cream, and some supposed sexual practice. Not terribly enlightening.
