The Hobbit

Two nights ago we started reading The Hobbit. It was Sebastian's suggestion. I'd tried reading it to him about a year ago, but he was too young; Gollum scared him (I did read his lines with a great deal of evil glee). It's going very well so far.

When my father read the Hobbit to me (I must have been about 7), there was a very long pause before Mirkwood, because I was scared of spiders. I've never tried reading it aloud myself, but I'd guess that the Trolls must be a complete delight, with their accent. Cockney trolls... how could anyone be scared of them?

Ever heard the BBC radio series of the Lord of the Rings? 1981, and I was glued to the radio for every episode. I gather they did the Hobbit, too, though I've never heard that.

You know, I think I did once hear the BBS production of LOTR - it was back when we were driving home from RQ Con I. That's the time that my roommate Scott made a comment that I've never forgotten. Galadriel was giving gifts to the Fellowship, and Gimli asked for a strand of her hair. She asked "And what would you do with such a gift?", and Scott said "You don't want to know."

I'll have to see if I can download that. It would be GREAT to play in the car for Sebastian...after I finish reading it to him, of course. Thanks for reminding me!
