To see or not to see?

Recently Teri asked me about how I put together posts for my journal. Well, actually she asked me something like "Why does that take you so long?"

I explained about going through my recent photographs, picking out the ones I could show, editing them to remove Sebastian - and at that point she stopped me to say that it seemed pointless to keep Sebastian off the journal, since his picture is now available online at the Woonsocket Call.

I was taken aback. Should I put his picture online here? What do you think?

And again, who do I think I'm talking to?

I think that if you post his picture with a caption including his complete name, birthdate, social security number, and daily schedule, you might be asking for a wee bit o' trouble. :-)

However, lots of people post pictures of their friends and/or family here. I don't think a generic picture will cause undue problems.

Well, everything except the SSN has been posted in one way or another online, I must admit.

I think one of Teri's concerns is that someone might use the photo to kidnap him. We've had a LOT of people come up to us on the street and in public places and try to touch him. Some of them even joke that they'd like to buy him or take him home. NOT a good thing to say to a suspicious mother!

Her other fear was that online perverts would misuse his photos somehow. Apparently she's not so worried about that any more, I guess - I'm not sure why.

"We've had a LOT of people come up to us on the street and in public places and try to touch him."

My "overprotective father" genes would go all spastic if people did that to my son, so I can understand your POV.

What's the worst that could happen if you were to post images including your son?

Now, how likely is that to hapen?

I personally think it wouldn't be a problem, but it's something only you can decide of course.

I doubt his pictures in your journal would be a problem... just put them behind a cut and make the post friends only and it should be fine.

Well, I have to admit that I like to show him off. If I put him behind a friends filter only three people will ever see him, and several of those already KNOW what he looks like! Image

If we worry excessively about every possible thing that could possibly
happen we would sit in our closets with guns waiting for the monsters.
I'd say that while the risks are not zero, they're not very high, so the
pics should be fine.
