The weekend, so far
Feb. 4th, 2006 10:31 pmSo far it has been a good long weekend. I took Friday off, because we had an appointment in Providence; in the morning, Teri and I went to the gym, and for the first time in my life I tried yoga.
Now, I'm about as ursine as a human being can be. That is, I'm massive, clumsy, and bear-like. So the thought of me doing yoga is no doubt comical to readers who've met me in person. And it would have been embarrassing to me as recently as five years ago, so embarrassing that I would probably have refused to go.
But fatherhood has mellowed me a lot. I went, and I tried my best. And it went pretty well.
There were times when it hurt, and I got confused several times. But I didn't cover myself in shame. At the end, I was amazed how hard the workout had been: we'd gone for an hour, with the last ten minutes being relaxation and meditation, and I was soaked in sweat - more sweat than if I'd done a hard 45 minute jog.
Unfortunately I won't be able to do it again unless I take another Friday off, although I suppose I could try it on my own. I think that Teri might try it again, too; I hope so.
Our appointment in town went well enough. And that afternoon, when we picked up Sebastian, we were delighted: he'd been really good. Since he'd also been really good for the rest of the week, including at the library during story time, I told him I'd buy him a book I recently got out of the library for him, a book that he loved: Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel.
That night at midnight I finished reading The Lord of the Rings for the thirtieth time (or more). As always, I found myself choking up at the end. I'm always glad that the appendices are so large, and that The Silmarillion remains to be read after TLoTR.
Today (Saturday) was a Sebastian-and-me day. We took Teri to the animal shelter, spent some time playing with the cats, and then took the open road. Went to Barnes & Nobles, where I spent a gift certificate I'd gotten for Christmas on a hardcover edition of Mike Mulligan; we could have spent half as much on a softcover edition, but he really loves this book (as do I; I grew up with it, too), and I know he'll get a lot of use out of it.
We went home and played in the back yard. It was nearly 60° - ridiculous! Sebastian is getting awfully big for his baby swing, but he really wanted to ride in it, so I said yes. Then we had lunch, and after that picked Teri up from the shelter. The rest of the evening went well.
I've gotten a lot of "I love you, Daddy"'s so far this weekend. He's taken to using comparatives - "I love you more than the whole world", for example. One of them today was "I love you more than outer space". I chuckled and returned the sentiment, of course.
It's moments like that that make everything else worthwhile, you know.
