Gmail apparently went down sometime overnight. Or at least, I thought it did.

That was, I'll admit, kind of frustrating.

It was still down this morning. So I messed around, did a little experimenting, and found that the Gtalk stand-alone app was working. Very odd!

I contacted the Gmail support team, but before I received their automated and frankly unhelpful response, I figured something out: although the URL that I normally use to reach Gmail was dead both from home and from work ("Network Error"), there was an alternate URL that worked fine.

http://gmail.google.com/gmail = DEAD
http://mail.google.com/mail/ = FINE

I let the support team know. And you, of course.

Perhaps I'm the only person in the world who used that first URL. But if not, maybe this will help someone out.
