Actually, they massively screwed me. Three years ago I bought a sofa and three box springs from Bob's. I made the additional mistake of paying for their five-year "warranty" on the sofa - but I thought that it would be worth it, because the saleswoman assured me that if anything went wrong with the couch for five years, it would be repaired or replaced with no problem.

You know what? Bob's furniture (and Furniture) is shit. The box springs broke within months. The couch started having problems within a couple of months, too; staples pulling loose, loud cracking noises from the frame, and springs pushing up from underneath, making lumps. But I didn't call it in, since I figured we should get some use out of it first. And besides, I had nothing to worry about. I had an expensive five-year warranty!

Three years later the couch was falling apart. Staples loose all over. Springs shot out and tangled underneath, and big uncomfortable bumps under the seats. The frame was cracked in the middle, and pulling apart on the sides. So I finally called Bob's.

They sent out a repair guy. He looked it over and took some pictures - presumably, in case I sued Bob's criminal ass. He told me that it was unrepairable. Then he did something interesting: he called his home office, and talked very quietly to them. After that, he asked if he could call his office on my cell phone. He spoke to them quietly again, and then handed me the phone and damned near ran out of the place. Clearly this was something he'd done a lot.

The weasel on the phone hemmed and hawed. He started "explaining" that the damage wasn't caused by a manufacturer's defect (the frame pulling apart and cracking wasn't a manufacturer's defect? WTF??). He was dragging it out as long as possible, so I finally said "Let's cut to the chase: I'm busy. You're not going to replace it?"

"No."

Bob and that "repairman" can go to hell. Don't buy from those assholes; they'll screw you sideways. And their furniture is absolute shit.

AC

My AC has been getting a bit smelly. I'd looked a while ago for an AC-cleaning service, but there don't seem to be any. So today I decided to clean it myself.

I snapped out the cooling vent and washed it thoroughly by hand with dishwashing fluid. I used isopropyl alcohol to wipe down all the surfaces inside the output housing, which was quite a lot of it. Then I got a clean old toothbrush and used it to carefully clean off the metal intake. I also used paper towels with isopropyl alcohol; on some parts of the intake, that worked a lot better.

I used canned air to clean out dust from further in, did some more cleaning all over with paper towels and alcohol, let the alcohol evaporate, reassembled everything, and started it up.

It smells nice and clean and it's running colder. Mission accomplished!
