Cell phone

Our AT&T cell phone contract expired a while ago, so we can upgrade our phones and make some changes. I recently discovered that as a Blue Cross employee I get a 19% discount on AT&T cell service; we'll have to put our service in my name instead of Teri's, but that's no problem.

Here's the question: Should I get an iPhone? I'd get a Google Android phone if I could, but AT&T doesn't have a Google phone. I got a demo of sorts from a co-worker of the iPhone, and it looked pretty cool (even though I hate Macs). Anyone out there have an iPhone? Or can you recommend a better alternative?

I have an iPod touch, which I love; since I don't want to buy a phone that the carrier won't unlock at the end of the contract commitment, I haven't bought an iPhone. (It'd also mean moving to AT&T, which I'd rather not do for other reasons.)

The question shouldn't be if you should get an iPhone or an Android.

The question should be "Do I wanna be paying a $300 a month service fee?".

I have a simple LG flip phone. It's basic and does everything I want it to without all the fancy nonsense and garbage wares that come with a lot of the easily breakable newer phones that are out there.

In short, save yourself the xpensive hassle & mess. Get a "trimodal" phone, if they're still out there, and don't worry about what The Smiths down the street have.

Our current service fee is around $120 per month, and that includes three phones - mine, Teri's and her mother's (we're on the family plan). As I reckon it, if I get an iPhone the 19% discount will mean our monthly bill will be $121.50 instead. And I'd get unlimited web access, which I don't have now.

Given that Teri is pretty addicted to the phone and is starting to text more and more often, I don't think we'll be able to save much money by downgrading. We had a cheaper plan at first, but she went way over on minutes; that's why we upgraded our plan several years ago.

As for me, I have to admit that it would be awfully nice to have web access during my commute! :D

The iPhone has a very Apple-style interface, which personally I loathe. I'd suggest trying one, either from a friend or in a shop, before you decide. It's a bit like Marmite, you may love it, you may hate it. Most decent phones these days will do web access, it doesn't have to be an iPhone for that.

The horrid thought that comes to my mind is, If the iPhone is like Marmite what cell phone thingy is like Vegemite? :)

Get a phone with GPS support, and get the game Zombie, Run!
